 Service

Hearts for Service

All students of FCS are required to participate in community service following the example of Jesus Christ who "did not come to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many." The Administration has determined that minimum requirements be set to ensure that FCS students experience the blessings of giving of their time and talents. Service hours are defined as volunteer work for a non-profit agency. The school shall provide opportunities for students to gain service hours, however, students may do work in their own churches or organizations which may qualify for meeting these requirements. For upper school students a required number of hours are necessary to graduate. Please consult the school administration to approve off campus service prior to its start.  Documentation for hours is needed toward verifying service outside of the school.  Service hours-summary:

·        Students must complete 20 hours of community service for each year of attendance for a total of 80 hours required for graduation at FCS.

·        Any community service completed the summer before the academic year starts will count for credit toward service hour requirements except the senior year.  All hours must be completed prior to graduation.

·        Parents/Students must submit a Service Hour Activity Report form to the principal so that hours can be verified and credited toward the students account.

·        A letter on business letterhead signed by the appropriate supervisor may be submitted in lieu of the form.

·        Students must not receive any compensation for labor or time for service hours.

·        Private party work hours cannot be counted toward students' community service hour requirement.

·        Please obtain approval for new or questioned service types or organizations prior to serving.

·        Service hours will appear at the end of each semester on the Conduct Report Card.

Middle School / High School

6th - 8th > Reading/Literacy

Already a program implemented by our media specialist, students will begin to systematically turn their voices into vision for those who cannot read because of blindness or visual impairment. Students in these grades will spend time recording their voices as they read book selections.

9th - 12th > Hands on Forsyth

Our high school students will provide an example for our entire school in the area of volunteerism and mission work. The high school students will work in various areas of mission and charity work, offered through Hands on Forsyth. The students will have the opportunity to serve others and model the image of Christ washing the feet of his disciples. They will have volunteer opportunities with agencies such as Whispering Hope, CASA, Petco pet adoption, grounds-keeping at local parks, etc.

Elementary

K - 2nd > Cumming Nursing Home - bimonthly visits & pen pals

Our most valuable of all generations, the Bible clearly tells us that we should care for the elderly. So many residents at nursing homes have few or no visitors. The students in our lower grades will be presented with an opportunity to bring joy to the lives of these seniors by visiting the nursing home (one grade, one month) and by adopting pen pals, so that they can keep in touch with residents, even when they aren't able to visit.

3rd - 5th >Pen Pals -Compassion International

Students in these grades will commit to sponsoring one child from an impoverished area of the world. By sponsoring a child, the students will have the ability to collect money for donations to the child, raise funds in creative ways, and correspond with the child about their family, education and cultural differences.  Students will be able to flex their ?writing' skills, and communicate by letter or webmail. Opportunities will arise during the holidays for students to possibly send extra money for gifts to their child, as well as extend holiday/birthday greetings.
